How Drop App Works

Drop is a simple, yet powerful loyalty program that lets you earn points on every dollar spent at all of your favorite stores. Earn points and redeem for iTunes gift cards, Amazon gift cards, and more.

What, you don’t have the Drop app yet!? If you like getting more for your dollar with little to no effort, this app is exactly what you need. In this Drop app review, we’ll find out why.

If you’re anything like me, then you are always looking for ways to save a little bit more. But, as I always say, if you are spending hours for the astute privilege of saving a few pennies, is it really worth it?

Answering that question specific to the Drop app will be the main focus of this review.

Drop App Overview

Canadian-based Drop was founded in 2015 and is headquartered in Toronto, ON. Originally a Canada-only app, the company expanded into the United States in October, 2017.

The app has been downloaded over 1 million times with more users downloading it every day. The app calls itself a loyalty program, and when it first launched, users were required to choose specific brands and would only earn points with those brands.

However, that is no longer the case, and the removal of the ball and chain is one of the reasons Drop is a must-have app. Over 300 retailers are supported, and you can earn points with all of them!

Which Stores Are Supported by Drop?

As mentioned above, over 300 retailers are supported, so we won’t list every single one. There are also different stores supported in the US vs. Canada.

Power Offers: Earn Points Automatically

Without a doubt, one of the coolest things about Drop is Power Offers. With these offers, all you have to do is link your credit card(s) to it, and the app does the rest.

One thing we look at in this Drop App review are Power Offers.

Then, any time you buy something with one of its supported retailers, you automatically earn points. You don’t even have to purchase things through the app.

In fact, I started using the app recently, but I kind of forgot about it. I wasn’t going into the app to check my points or be sure I was earning them. And yet, I just checked my points to see this:

In this Drop app review, we'll take a look at how you can automatically earn points for minimal effort.

The lightning bolt indicates that this purchase was made with a linked card, as opposed to one made directly within the app.

For reference, I grabbed this snippet on February 29th (Leap Year!), so as you can see, I’m earning points all the time without lifting a finger.

I’ve reviewed other points/cashback apps, such as Honey and Ibotta, and while both are certainly easier than clipping coupons, the process isn’t nearly as effortless as it is with Drop.

How Much Do You Earn With Power Offers?

According to Drop, the Power Offer points rates change from time to time, so what you earn could vary. However, if you check the snippet above, you can get a sense of what earnings may look like.

Each point is worth 1 cent, so I earned 50 cents for spending $10 at Starbucks. That works out to 5% cashback, which is a pretty decent amount!

In fact, all of the above points accruals work out to be about 5%. Again, your mileage may vary, but this is a pretty sweet deal, especially since, remember, you earn this points automatically. No logging into the app – nothing. Just link your card and earn.

Drop App Chrome Extension (Beta)

Although Drop has chosen to focus first and foremost on a mobile app (since, for many people, that is their primary device nowadays), there is now a Chrome extension as well.

Drop App Review Chrome Extension

Sure, many people prefer mobile these days, but that doesn’t mean desktops and laptops should be ignored completely. When you visit a site through the Drop Chrome extension, you’ll see a message letting you know you are earning points:

Drop App review Chrome extension shopping
Bingo. That’s what I like to see.

The one drawback I can see to using the Chrome extension is that, although you can shop offers, you can’t redeem your points or look at your points history.

So the Chrome extension is still a bit limited even though you might think you would be able to do more on a desktop. It’s still in beta though, so perhaps these features will be added later.

Get Drop Offers In Your Inbox

Another way you can choose to earn points, particularly if you don’t like relying on the mobile app, is to get offers in your inbox.

Awesome Easter Egg: Snake!

You guys remember Snake, don’t you? A better question, really, is whether you’ve been around long enough to have had the privilege of owning one of the first fully-portable mobile phones: the illustrious Nokia 3310.

Why am I bringing this up? Because everyone’s favorite feature on this phone was that is has games on it. And the best game of all? Snake, of course!

Anyway, given the nostalgia I have over Snake, I couldn’t help but grin when I saw that Drop actually has Snake built in.

Snake!!!

As if that’s not cool enough, you actually earn points in Drop for the points you earn in Snake. Like, real points. Like points you can redeem for gift cards.

Points just for playing Snake. Nice.

This alone is enough to make me want to use Drop even more. Seriously.

Is Drop App Legit?

Drop app is completely legit. I’ve been using it for a few months now and have had no issues whatsoever.

Yes, you will find some mixed reviews if you read them on Google Play and the Apple store. However, the biggest complaint is that Drop has increased the minimum payouts. While that frustration is not entirely unjustified, it’s not uncommon for survey sites and cashback apps to have minimum payouts.

Minimum payouts are not just a way to prevent people from getting their money. It also makes them more loyal to the app (after all, Drop started out as a loyalty app).

So yes, I would say that Drop is a legit app. Given the minimal effort needed to earn points, I still think it’s legit (and worth using).

Is Drop App Free?

Yes, Drop is absolutely free to download – and to use. The only difference between using Drop and, well, not using it – is all the points you’ll be earning when you use it.

How Does Drop Make Money?

You might wonder how Drop is able to make money if they charge nothing to use it. Well, Drop is using essentially the same business model as Honey; that is, they earn a commission from retailers any time you make a purchase through Drop.

What is the Minimum Payout?

As mentioned above, Drop has changed the minimum payout needed to redeem points in the past. At one point, it was $10.

However, you must have at least $25 worth of points before you can redeem a gift card. That is of course much higher than $10, but it is still not that difficult to reach. By using linked cards alone, I am almost there after a couple of months.

If I were actively using the app, I would easily have gotten there much sooner.

The Verdict

Drop is a pretty nice app overall. It supports a relatively wide list of retailers (over 300) and is supported in both the US and Canada. It should be noted however that more retailers are supported in the US than in Canada.

Still, most popular stores are covered. You can earn points while at home or while on the go, and Power Offers make it incredibly easy to earn points – you don’t even have to open the app.

There is a new Chrome extension, though it has limited functionality at the moment.

All in all, Drop is a nice app that makes saving money a breeze, and it’s worth a look by anyone looking to save some money.
